Quick Note -- "Whois" Is Your Friend

Full page ad in the C-J blasting taxes and fees on the oil and natural gas industry. Typical industry screed -- "this level [of taxes] could produce devastating effects on our economy, all when American can least afford it." (And if the economy were great, they'd be saying taxes would hurt the growth.) The ad refers to EnergyTomorrow.org.

Anyway -- I like to find out who is behind these things, so I turned to one of my favorite tools: whois. "Whois" is an old pre-web Internet command that returns the domain owner information. There are lots of "whois" services out there; just Google to find one. I like the one at whois.domaintools.com.

Guess what? The whois record for EnergyTomorrow.org tells us that it is owned by the American Petroleum Institute. Wow, what a surprise -- they're opposed to new taxes on their profits. Shocker, fer shure.

So, when you see a site for some cause or another, do some digging to see who is REALLY behind it. The first place to start is always whois. Now you know.
