A Useful Windows 7 Utility

One of the things I liked in XP was the network activity icons. There was one for each network connection I had enabled, usually wireless and ethernet. I would check them for activity, to see if data was moving or things were just "stuck." But in Windows 7, there were gone, replaced only with the five-bars strength indicator. Bleah.

So, I was pleasantly surprised to find a free utility that puts those blinking monitors back in the task bar in the notification area. It's called -- wait for it -- Network Activity Indicator for Windows 7, and it's just exactly what you'd expect. I downloaded the second version, the one with the self-install executable with uninstall support. I set it to load with Windows and to stay visible, and it's sitting down there now, letting me know what's up with my network activity.

I'm going to explore the parent site, IT Samples, some more over the holiday, so perhaps I'll have some other goodies to report on. In the meantime, if you also miss the little blinking monitors, give this utility a try.
