Letter from Lindsay

Got this letter from Lindsay Dickinson, president of Metro Dems. Got to share it:

::

For as long as I can remember, my father has always said, “prepare for the worst, expect the best.”  Growing up, I never fully understood this saying. I figured he must have heard it as a youngster himself, growing up during World War II.  It was just a generational statement which was glaringly pessimistic to me.

While watching Morning Joe on MSNBC recently, Eugene Robinson, of the Washington Post, said something, that while political, sounded eerily familiar to me. “You can never take any campaign for granted.”

Robinson’s statement has been in the back of my mind since, right next to my father’s saying. Luckily, I have aged some since first hearing my father say this and have become slightly wiser. I have taken hold of each statement and, more importantly, I’ve realized I must act on them.

We, as Democrats, had two glorious election cycles. We began with John Yarmuth beating the invincible Anne Northup. Two years later, Americans made history as we elected out first African American President by energizing our nation and showing that we all could hope again.

But history repeats itself and we find ourselves on the brink of another disastrous midterm election. Republicans will do anything to keep Americans from getting back to work at good jobs. Republicans are making sure the income gap continues to widen, forcing many working families to sink into poverty. Republicans are caring too much for themselves to care for all Americans. Republicans are making clatter out of nothing to drown out the cries of the needy. We cannot sit still. We must take action and we must take action now!

Recent Courier–Journal/WHAS 11 Bluegrass polls have not been encouraging for us. At the beginning of September, polls showed that John Yarmuth was neck and neck with Todd Lally. Jack Conway is at 47% while Rand Paul is at 49% as of the September 25th results. Greg Fischer and Hal Heiner are at 48% and 42% respectively in a poll released on September 27th. We know that it should not be like this – it can’t be like this.

I ask you to please join me and others as we strive to make this city, state and nation about the people and for the people. Idly sitting by and only complaining does nothing except continue the damage. Doing nothing shows the world we are all talk and not substance, like our opponents are. Doing nothing prevents us from stepping forward and reaching out to those in need, to those who are so often forgotten. We cannot sit still and must not sit still.

This is our time. This is America’s time. America needs individuals to stand up and take action. We need to show our state and nation that we have not lost hope in the Democratic Party, our candidates and our leaders.

Everyone likes to expect the best, to feel safe that things will go our way. But this time we must not take things for granted, we must prepare for the worst no matter how hard it is. We must endure to make this the state and nation we are proud to be a part of. Our opponents will continue their pettiness, with their America for some, but not for all. So we must move mountains and work for each and every one of us.

Please join me in the next 26 days as we fight to a Democratic victory. Please join me as we work to keep John Yarmuth in Washington representing us with his enduring passion. Please join me as work to put Jack Conway in the US Senate to stand up for us and to defeat the destructive nature of his opponent. Please join me as we work to put Greg Fischer at City Hall to continue our city’s growth toward a promising future. Please join me as we work to change the face of our State Senate by electing Marty Meyer and Rick Hiles and silencing David Williams.

Whoever said life isn’t fair was right. But, unless we act, life for the neediest will only get worse. Those who have worked day after day and never given up on themselves or their families will suffer. You and I will suffer.

Join me, join us, as we don’t give up, as we prepare for the political fight of our lives, as we show the Republicans that we will not sit and be silent. Join me as we stand up for each and every American. The future holds tremendous promise, but only if we act. Don’t take this moment for granted or wait for the best to miraculously appear. The time is now for us to act and we must. We are the Metro Democrats and we make THE difference.

Lindsay Dickinson
Metro Democratic Club president
