GeekTime: TweetDeck

I am on both Facebook and Twitter (follow me at BruceWriter). I tend to use Facebook for personal and friend stuff, and Twitter for political and writing stuff. Occasionally, though, I want to send something to both, so I was looking for a way to do that. In addition, I wanted a way to keep up with both without having to keep switching back and forth.

Enter TweetDeck. TweekDeck is a powerful but simple tool that does two basic things really well: it lets you put various FB and TW feeds into columns, so they just scroll down the page as they get updated; and, it lets you send a single post to either service or to both.

Here's the basic interface, with the Facebook feed on the left and the Twitter "All Friends" feed on the right:

The buttons at the top allow you to add various Twitter feeds, such as Replies or Favorites, to columns of their own. In addition, if you move your mouse over the feed icons to the left, you get mini-icons for more features:

  • If it's a Facebook status, you can Tweet it, or you can send it via email.
  • If it's a Tweet, you can @-reply to it, direct message to the poster, reTweet it, do a bunch of things on the user like follow or add to a group, and bunch of things to the Tweet like mark it a Favorite or email it.

All in all, TweetDeck is one of the most handy and well-thought-out pieces of software I've used in a while. Highly recommended!
