Green Convene Gets Organized

I'm getting involved in a new group in town -- the Green Convene. Organized by Jackie Green and a number of other local environmental activists, the group put on a weekend event back in February as a jumping-off point, and has since taken the energy from that meeting and funneled it into building a new coalition working for all manner of sustainability.

They've asked me to be on the board as the person who coordinates with other organizations, and I've accepted. It's been an interesting process seeing this new thing get built from the ground up, and I'm intrigued with the structure they've come up with. (More on that in a future post.)

The other interesting thing is how little overlap there is between this group and the various political groups I'm in, like Metro Dems. I know a lot of the Dems and progressives in town, and when I went to my first board meeting, I knew almost no one there. It's like the political activists and the environmental activists are living in two different cities.

We'll see how this goes. There are some good people on the board, and more good people working with the group. The subject matter is huge, the work complicated, and the status-quo inertia daunting. But this coalition seems to be building for the long haul. I'm cautiously hopeful of good things and good movement because of the Green Convene.

More to come ...
