Hey CJ -- You Got Anything Else?
Let me say this right up front: I am not a fan of Jim King. His funding of his daughter's campaign, his alleged attacks on Ken Herndon, his support of Mitch McConnell (!!) -- nope, not someone that I have any warm fuzzies for.
But ...
This attempt by the Courier-Journal to make 28-year-old events pertinent to this year's mayoral race is just too big a stretch for me to ignore.
If you read the stories, it's obvious that Jim King had anger and abuse issues at the time of his divorce. In fact, if those same events happened today, he'd probably be arrested. And he should be. Abuse of any kind is inexcusable, and violence against spouses is always wrong, period.
But here's my question for the C-J: these events happened not just years, but decades ago. Can you back these up with something more recent, establish a pattern? Does Jim King treat his staff like this? Does he still have anger issues? Or did he learn from this, get help, deal with his demons?
I'm concerned about the events of 1981, absolutely. But it would be better journalism, and more valuable to the current mayoral race, if you had followed up with more reporting on the Jim King of today. As it is, we're all left to wonder: is the Jim King of 1981 the Jim King of 2009?

Just a note -- I wrote this before the King -- St. X brouhaha, so it may be that my request for more current evidence of King issues was premature. However, I stand by the original premise: if Jim King has anger issues, the C-J should be able to find something more recent than 1981.
Still not voting for him, though.
